            MINISTRY PAYS CONDOLENCE VISIT TO THE JAPANESE EMBASSY  

 

            Undersecretary Özaslan: ‘Attack against Japanese tourists has distressed Turkish people’.

 

            The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has paid a condolence visit to the Japanese Embassy regarding the stabbing attack in Cappadocia against two Japanese tourists. The attack caused the death of one of the tourists and critically wounded the other.

 

            Upon the order of the Minister Ömer Çelik, the undersecretary Özgür Özaslan and the Director General for Promotion İrfan Önal, have paid a visit to the Japanese Ambassador Kiyosihi Araki.

 

            Özaslan has made a statement together with the Ambassador after the meeting. Özaslan underlined the significance of the Cappadocian region for cultural tourism and indicated that the local community is sensitive on such incidents and had condemned the attack. Özaslan further told that they forwarded Minister Çelik’s condolence message to the Ambassador. He noted that the attack would not affect the friendly relations between Turkey and Japan.

 

            In the statement, Özaslan additionally indicated the following;

 

            SAFETY OF TOURISTS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE HOST COUNTRY

           

            These incidents have greatly distressed Japanese people and Turkish people as well.

 

            Needless to say, safety of domestic and foreign tourists and establishing an environment for them to visit anywhere and participate in any tourism activities, besides taking all type of legal precautions,  are the responsibility and duty of the host country.

 

            As Ministry and the Government, we will be more sensitive thereafter in order to establish this environment. At present, our relations with Japan are to be on good terms than ever before.

 

            We are particularly to share their sorrow. Cappadocia Region is especially significant for cultural tourism and local community is very sensitive on this issue. The community of Nevşehir and community of Göreme as well, in which the incident occurred, have also condemned this unfortunate incident. They have reacted by displaying the Turkish and Japanese flags with the intention of sharing the incident on that sense.

           

 WE WILL TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID THE RECURRENCE OF THESE INCIDENTS

 

            Ambassador Araki has already been informed regarding the issue. At present, the offender related to the death of one Japanese tourist and wounding of other one has been caught.

 

            Unfortunately, we are not able to do anything beyond sharing their grief; however, we have declared that every type of precautions is to be taken in due course in order to avoid the recurrence of these incidents. The friendly relations between Turkey and Japan will not be affected by this unfortunate incident.

 

WE BELIEVE THAT MEDIA WILL BE SENSITIVE ON THIS ISSUE

 

            Ambassador asked certain questions about the issue. Currently, he is in Nevşehir to obtain information and help regarding wounded Japanese tourist in hospital, her family and children. The corpse of the deceased Japanese tourist is currently in Ankara for autopsy. The procedure is still going on.

 

            The purpose of our visit is to express our sympathy. We have conveyed that we are ready to help if needed.

 

            It is our sincere hope that the relations between two countries will not be at the agenda by these incidents anymore. We also believe that media will be more sensitive on this issue.
