INTERNATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY MEETING IN DIYARBAKIR

"41st International Excavation, Research and Archaeometry Symposium", held at Diyarbakır Dicle University Congress Center, brought together about 60 scientists in Diyarbakır.

Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Nadir Alpaslan said: "We have mobilized all the opportunities to spread the excavations throughout the year and to get faster performance. We are in an effort to uphold Türkiye's most important 20 archaeological excavations through the whole year and plan to take into account all excavations with this perspective."

The 41st International Symposium on Excavation, Research and Archaeometry, regularly organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism since 1979, began at Diyarbakır Dicle University's Congress Center.

The five-day symposium began, participated by Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Nadir Alpaslan and about 60 scientists from the US, Italy, Germany, Canada, UK, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, France and Japan.

Underlining they have been exerting their best efforts to continue and speed up the excavations throughout the whole year, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Nadir Alpaslan stressed in his speech at the opening ceremony the importance of the surviving cultural heritage, presenting them to the humanity and handing them on to the coming generations.

Also highlighting that archaeological excavations shall be carried out effectively and fast without compromising any scientific criteria under any condition, Nadir Alpaslan said, "We are in efforts to continue Türkiye's most important 20 excavations throughout the whole year and plan to take into account all excavations with this perspective."

Nadir Alparslan, under the guidance of Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, stated: "We have involved the Turkish History Institution in these works for the purpose of spreading and accelerating the excavations throughout the whole year and will keep working with the Cultural Assets and Museums General Directorate and Turkish History Institution to this end.

Great increase in excavations and surface surveys

The director of Cultural Assets and Museums Murat Gürül stressed that a significant increase was observed in excavations and surface surveys in Türkiye in recent years, and added that the resources for the excavations reached to 33 million Turkish Liras in 2018.

Murat Gürül stated that upon the decision of Council of Ministers, the number of the excavations carried out by scientists was 57 in 2002 while it has reached to 122 in 2019, and added: “In 2018, a total of 586 archaeological activities have been carried out, 122 of which were Turkish excavations, 32 of them were foreign excavations, 6 were surface surveys, 193 were rescue-excavations and 31 were public investment rescue excavations. The budget allocated for the excavations was 33 million Turkish Liras in 2018 and this is about 18 times the budget allocated in 2002.”

Governor Hasan Basri Güzeloğlu expressed his gratitude to host a five-day symposium in which 450 papers have been submitted in Diyarbakır and also said that the city had witnessed history since the birth of mankind and the findings from the latest excavations contributed significantly to the history of Diyarbakır.

The 41st International Symposium on Excavation, Research and Archeometry ended on 21 June.
